Eiger North Face (Stollenloch)

The fascination of the Eiger north face lies in its history and the dramatic events that have taken place there. The rugged, uninviting, mighty and impressive rock face towers over Grindelwald at 2,000 m; it’s reserved exclusively for experienced climbers, who can enjoy a breathtakingly beautiful view of the Grindelwald valley after completing the daring ascent. We’ll collect you at the agreed meeting place (e.g. Grindelwald Grund train station) and then take the train up to the Kleine Scheidegg mountain pass, where we’ll admire the legendary Eiger north face from below with our local guide. He’ll point out the course of the original route and show you Stollenloch 3.8.

You’ll then take the train to the extra stop at Stollenloch 3.8, where you’ll begin the ascent of the notorious Eiger north face, protected by a patented mountain guide and equipped with a helmet and climbing gear. This “exit” was used to dispose of excavated material from the tunnel when the railway was built. The first attempts to rescue stranded mountaineers were made from here in 1936. You’ll be captivated by the magnificent view.
And depending on the conditions, you’ll even be able to climb a few metres yourself – a unique experience! After a warming drink – with a touch of whisky if you like – you’ll take the train up to the Jungfraujoch or back down to the valley.
